Work stress hits everyone differently—and for some, it brings tears. A new CivicScience survey shows that 9% of U.S. adults say they cry after a particularly bad work day, 29% say it happens “here and there,” and 62% say they rarely or never cry (excluding those who said “does not apply”).

How often do you cry after a particularly bad day at work?

Gen Z is by far the most likely to cry after work, with over half saying they cry at least “here and there.” Nearly one in five Gen Z adults (19%) cry “all the time” after a bad work day, more than double the general population. Millennials are next most likely to shed tears, while Gen X and Baby Boomers rarely report crying after work.

But demographics aren’t the only thing setting workplace criers apart:

  • National Parks: 70% visit national parks yearly, compared to less than half of non-criers.
  • Libraries: Nearly 40% visit a local library at least once a month—more than double those who don’t cry at work.
  • WNBA: Over half follow the WNBA, making them 30+ percentage points more likely than non-criers to be fans.
  • Concerts: They’re 27 percentage points more likely to attend concerts at least once a month.
  • Splurging: They’re 13 percentage points more likely to splurge on themselves, with expensive meals and spa treatments topping the list.

Those who cry after a bad day at work stand out not just for how they handle stress, but for how they seek joy and enrichment outside the office. From soaking up nature to cheering on sports, attending concerts, or indulging in self-care, they’re finding meaningful ways to balance the emotional toll of work.
