October 14th is National Fossil Day. And while fossils are often associated with a big archaeological dig or a faraway discovery, the truth is that fossils can be found where you least expect them. CivicScience took a closer look at those who’ve found a fossil in their backyard (excluding ‘does not apply’).

Fossil finders are more likely to be men and Gen Z than those who have not found a fossil, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. Here’s how fossil finders break the mold compared to those who’ve never found one (excluding ‘does not apply’).

Tech Fans: Fossil finders are nearly three times as likely to own and enjoy smart displays (e.g., Amazon Echo Show, Google Home Hub) than their fossil-less counterparts (24% vs 9%).

Social Media Savvy: While 27% of fossil finders have made a purchase from social media, just 11% of non fossil-finders say the same.

Fight Fiends: Those lucky enough to have found a fossil in their backyard are seven times more likely than non-finders to say they follow mixed martial arts ‘very’ closely.

Furniture Finders: Among those who are buying furniture, fossil finders are ten percentage points more likely than their fossil-less counterparts to look at catalogues from furniture stores, as opposed to perusing furniture store websites, scrolling social media or browsing decorating magazines (17% vs 7%).

Home Sellers: Those who have found a fossil in their backyard are 24 percentage points more likely to list their home in the next six months (29% vs 5%).

Clearly, those who have found a fossil in their backyard aren’t just lucky, they’re tuned into technology, love a good fight and have specific decorating habits that put them in a class of their own every time they go to open their wallets.
