February 26th is National Toast Day–a fun excuse to crisp up your favorite bread. But what will Americans be spreading across that perfectly golden surface? The data paint a delicious picture.
Among those with an opinion, 50% of people say that butter is their preferred spread for toast. In second place, 23% like jam or jelly and third is tied between avocado and peanut butter, both ranking at 11%. Coming in last place at 5% is hummus.
Women slightly outpace men with their preference for butter, while Baby Boomers are nearly twice as likely as Gen Z to say butter is their top toast pick. Perhaps not surprisingly, Gen Z leads in preferring avocados, outpacing all other age groups in this category by at least nine percentage points.
Of course, this demographic data is just the first taste of what sets toast topping fans apart. Here’s what we know about those who have a favorite spread:
Restaurant Preferences: Those who prefer avocados on their toast are the most likely to say they have visited a restaurant that grows its own food, with 65% indicating they’ve had this experience. Just 41% of jam and jelly fans and 45% of butter fans say the same.
Recipe Fans: Those who prefer butter on their toast are more than twice as likely as hummus fans to say they cook from a recipe (48% vs 22%).
Radio Listening: Butter and peanut butter fans are the most likely to listen to the radio daily (40%), while jam and jelly fans come in second with daily listening (34%) and avocado fans come in third (21%).
Snack Time: While 61% of butter fans say they rarely or never eat snack, health, diet, or supplement bars, 73% of hummus fans say they eat them once a week or more.
Gym Equipment: While 60% of hummus and avocado fans either own or have access to at-home gym equipment, just 36% of butter and 38% of jam fans say the same.
Furry Friends: Among those with a cat or dog, avocado fans are the most likely to own one or more cats, while peanut butter fans are the most likely to own one or more dogs. Butter fans, meanwhile, lead with owning both.

Clearly, your favorite toast spread can say a lot about you–especially when it comes to unique consumer preferences–in and out of the kitchen.
