In the world of hair, one question makes the rounds more than all others–do you prefer short hair or long hair? As of late, long hair has been turning heads, with many opting into longer locks. Whether due to its versatility, association with youthfulness, economic practicality or alignment with broader cultural shifts, what’s clear is that long hair wearers are in vogue, with 52% of Americans currently preferring long hair over short.
As the data show, fans of long hair also display unique behaviors outside of the hair salon. Here’s what you may not have known about those who prefer long hair (among those with an opinion):
Dog Ownership: Long hair fans are 13 percentage points more likely to own dogs than short hair fans.
Shopaholics: While both long and short hair fans tend to be careful about their spending, long hair fans are over twice as likely to say they have difficulty controlling their spending (11% vs 3%).
Healthy Eating Woes: While 25% of long hair fans say they don’t eat healthier because it’s “too expensive,” just 19% of short hair fans say the same.
Music Fans: Long hair fans are more likely to say that music is a ‘passion’ of theirs than short hair fans (20% vs 12%).
Brand Loyalty: While quality and price influence brand loyalty the most, those who prefer long hair are more than three times as likely as short hair fans to say that they are loyal to the brands they buy because of the service (18% vs. 5%).
Clearly, a preference for long hair is more than just a style choice, it’s a reflection of a wider range of consumer behaviors that make this demographic stand out from the crowd.
