For some, the gym is all about sweat and sneakers. For others, it’s also about style. A CivicScience survey running over the past five years finds that among women who exercise, 22% say they wear makeup when they work out, another 22% sometimes do, and 56% say they never do.

Lower-income households are both the most and least likely to wear makeup to the gym, while middle- and high-income households are more likely to fall into the “sometimes” category. Gen Z adults aged 18-29 and adults 65+ lead in wearing makeup during workouts. Rural residents are also more likely than their suburban or urban counterparts to hit the gym with makeup on.

But demographics aren’t the only thing setting makeup-wearing gym-goers apart:

  • Buy Now, Pay Later: They’re nearly twice as likely to use BNPL services.

  • Local Newspaper: They’re 17 percentage points more likely to read a print edition of a local newspaper weekly.

  • Social Issues: They’re over 10 percentage points more likely to say they research a brand’s stance on social issues.

Makeup-wearing gym-goers stand out not just for their style on the treadmill, but for the choices they make beyond the workout. From tapping into BNPL services to flipping through the local paper and checking up on brands’ values, they bring their own unique blend of habits to both the gym and everyday life.
