The first week of December has brought about multiple snowstorms throughout the country. With many shoveling themselves out and having to juggle around post-Thanksgiving travel, just how do Americans feel about snow today? The latest ongoing CivicScience polling finds a mixed bag of sentiments. Forty-three percent of U.S. adults with an opinion either ‘like’ or ‘love’ snow. Meanwhile, nearly one-quarter say they ‘do not’ like snow. A look by age reveals that those who are 65+ are most likely to say they are NOT a fan of snow, while Millennials and Gen Xers lead the way as snow lovers.

How do those who say they ‘love’ snow compare with those who ‘don’t like it’? Here’s what CivicScience data has to say:

Hoodie Preferences: When it comes to whether they prefer zip-up or pullover hoodies, those who say they love snow are twice as likely as non-snow fans to report they prefer pullover hoodies (34% to 17%). Conversely, non-snow lovers outpace in their preference for zip-up hoodies (35% to 31%). They are also less likely than snow lovers to be fans of hoodies in general.

Beans or No Beans in Chili: Some may be grabbing a bowl of chili to warm up on a cold and snowy winter day, but will there be beans in that serving? Seventy-two percent of snow lovers tell CivicScience they prefer their chili to have beans, compared to 60% among non-snow lovers. While chili without beans is much less popular among both segments, those who dislike snow are slightly more likely to prefer beanless chili (19% to 15%).

Love to Nap: Those who love snow are also much more likely to say they ‘love’ to nap, compared to non-snow lovers (43% to 24%, respectively).

Music Genre: Snow lovers are more likely to say they listen to country music most often (29% to 18%), while non-snow lovers outpace on listening to rock music (58% to 51%).

Trying New Food: Nearly half (45%) of those who love snow say they seek out and try new foods more than most other people they know, 10 points higher than non-snow fans who say the same.

The data suggest that age and attitude toward snow are intertwined with core lifestyle choices, implying that one’s reaction to winter weather is not just about the weather itself, but also reflects a fundamental preference for either traditional, comfort-based routines (snow lovers) or perhaps more practical, less domestically focused routines (non-snow lovers).
