With the official arrival of spring comes the promise of warmer weather. And as a result, Americans in cooler climates may be starting the process of switching out their fall and winter clothes with clothes more appropriate for spring and summer.

Often a part of the closet switch-over process, laundering is one task that can make future seasonal clothing swaps more seamless. But does that same attention to detail extend to outerwear?

Current data show that just 25% of Americans dry clean or wash their winter coats at the end of every cold season. Meanwhile, 40% do this if it’s needed and 31% never do. In the minority, 4% just buy a new coat and skip the cleaning altogether.

Those who do a yearly coat clean tend to skew female, outpacing men who do a yearly coat clean by eight percentage points. Adults aged 18-44 are more likely than those 45+ to clean their coats at the end of the season, as are those making $100K or less annually.

However, this is just the start of what sets yearly coat cleaners apart from those who do not do a seasonal outerwear cleaning. Here are the facts:

Home Cleaning Habits: While 52% of those who clean their winter coats at the end of the cold season say they clean a little bit almost every day, just 34% of those who never clean their winter coats say the same.

Laundry Preferences: Those who clean their winter coats at the end of the cold season are 19 percentage points more likely to rank laundry as a favorite chore than those who never clean their winter coats (27% vs 8%).

Pantry Preparedness: When it comes to having a very well-stocked pantry, yearly winter coat cleaners outpace those who never clean their coats by 12 percentage points (34% vs 22%).

Clothing Overload: Despite their attention to clean coats, yearly winter coat cleaners are 11 percentage points more likely than non-winter coat cleaners to have clothes in their closet that they’ve never worn (39% vs 28%).

Overnight Unpacking: When staying more than one night in a hotel, 42% of yearly winter coat cleaners unpack their clothes. Just 27% of those who don’t clean their winter coats say the same.

Clearly, those who perform a yearly winter coat cleaning are fastidious, not just about their coats but about cleanliness in many aspects of their lives. With an eye for preparedness and a desire to feel at home, these consumers demonstrate unique behaviors in and out of their wardrobe.
