Do you consider yourself a pro gift giver—or someone who gets completely stumped when it’s time to shop for others? A CivicScience poll of more than 20K U.S. adults, running over the last several years, finds that about 30% say they’re a good gift giver, while 46% admit they struggle to figure out what to buy. (Another 23% selected ‘other,’ excluding those who said it ‘does not apply.’) These findings build on last week’s CivicScience study, which examined whether people would tell their partner they didn’t like a gift.

Self-proclaimed good gift givers tend to be Millennials, particularly adults aged 30-44. They’re also more likely to be women and to earn $100K or more annually. But demographics don’t tell the whole story; those who say they’re great at gifting also share distinct habits and preferences.

Here’s what sets pro gift givers apart from those who say they get stumped:

  • Travel: Confident gift givers are more likely to say travel is a passion, and 30% report increasing their travel spending, compared to just 16% of those who struggle with gift buying.

  • Cooking: They’re nearly twice as likely to say they ‘love’ cooking (32% vs. 18%).

  • Digital Reading: Nearly one-quarter read digital content from national newspaper websites (such as The New York Times) daily, outpacing self-described bad gift givers by six percentage points.

  • Splurging: Good gift givers are 13 points more likely to say they splurge on themselves. When they do, they most often choose an expensive meal or shopping spree and are roughly twice as likely as bad gift givers to splurge on event tickets.

  • Food Buying: Nearly 30% say they buy locally grown food every chance they get, compared to under a quarter of those who don’t know what gifts to buy.

Being a good gift giver may come down to more than intuition; it appears to be tied to lifestyle choices rooted in experience, curiosity, and spending confidence. From travel and food to media habits and splurges, those who feel confident giving gifts bring that same intentionality into many other parts of their lives.
