When it’s time for dinner, everyone has their favorite meals–the ones they crave after a bad day, or look forward to when it’s time to celebrate. And given that so many different cuisines are available across the country, Americans have their pick of flavors. With over 10 years of data and over two million responses, CivicScience has a firm grasp on which types of food Americans prefer.
Currently Italian and Mexican cuisine top the list. However, a small but mighty 8% of Americans prefer Japanese food–with Gen Z leading the way in appreciating all that Japanese cuisine has to offer. This unique demographic displays habits and behaviors that set them apart from those who prefer other types of food, in ways that extend beyond the sushi bar.
Halloween Plans: Those who prefer Japanese food outpace all other cuisine lovers with the intention to dress up for Halloween this year (34%). Indian food fans come in nine percentage points behind, while Mexican food fans trail by 15 percentage points.
Hair Care: Japanese food fans are more likely than other cuisine fans to get their hair cut frequently (59%). Italian food fans come in second (52%) and Mexican food fans take third (48%).

Used Car Purchasing Plans: Nearly half of Japanese food fans (47%) are either ‘somewhat’ or ‘very’ likely to buy or lease a used car in the next 90 days. They outpace Italian food fans with the same intention by 27 percentage points.
LinkedIn Usage: Twenty-nine percent of Japanese food fans use LinkedIn either ‘daily’ or ‘weekly,’ outpacing all others by a minimum of nine percentage points.
