March 3rd is National Pancake Day (IHOP’s version), which means it’s the perfect opportunity to plate up a hot stack, fresh from the griddle, and dig in. When it comes to pancakes, they’re far from being one size fits all, with seemingly endless types to enjoy. However, 41% of Americans say that a regular pancake is the best type of pancake (among those with a preference). Those who prefer blueberry come in second place (27%) with chocolate chip fans coming in third (16%). Rounding out the list are those who like crepes the most (10%) and those who prefer banana pancakes (6%).

Demographic data show that men outpace women in preferring blueberry pancakes (27% vs 22%), while women outpace men in their preference for chocolate chips (11% vs 7%). Age also plays a role, with Gen Z 10 times as likely to prefer chocolate chip pancakes as Baby Boomers. Meanwhile, regular pancakes are the top choice of those 45+. However, these details are just a first glance at what makes pancake fans stand out.

Here’s what distinguishes each type of pancake fan:

Spending Habits: When receiving a gift of money, regular pancake fans are 10 percentage points more likely than banana pancake fans to say they spend it (60% vs 50%).

Social Bandwidth: Those who prefer chocolate chip pancakes are twice as likely to say they enjoy being around people as those who prefer crepes (36% vs 18%).

Big Picture Thinking: While 58% of banana pancake fans say they like to focus on the big picture and possibilities in their life, just 44% of regular pancake fans say the same.

Job Satisfaction: Those who prefer regular pancakes are 27 percentage points more likely to say they are happy in their job, than those who prefer banana pancakes (74% vs 47%).

Snack Time: While 19% of chocolate chip pancake fans say they snack before lunch, just 13% of regular pancake fans and crepe fans say the same (among those who snack).

Whether you prefer a traditional, plain pancake or a sweet add-in, it’s clear that no two pancake fans are exactly alike. From how they spend to when they snack, pancake fans are as unique as the ingredients they add into their batter.
