Do you prefer cooking or cleaning up? CivicScience data show that among those with an opinion, 70% of people would rather cook versus the 30% who would rather clean up. While most prefer cooking, Millennials are most likely to prefer this to cleaning, whereas Baby Boomers 65+ have a slight lead in other age groups when it comes to cleaning up. Additionally, middle income households lead in preferring cleaning up, whereas, high-income households hold a slight lead in cooking

Beyond demographics, here’s what the data show:

Self-Assessed Health: Those who prefer to clean up are five percentage points more likely to say they are ‘very healthy’ than those who prefer to cook (21% vs 26%).

Home Environment: While 16% of those who like to cook report living in a home with 4-5 people, just 11% of those who like to clean up say the same. By contrast, those who like to clean are six percentage points more likely to live in a home with 1-3 people (84% vs 78%).

Sleep Trends: Those who prefer to cook are five percentage points more likely to say they get enough sleep “always” or “most of the time” than those who would rather clean up (52% vs 47%).

Car Buying Research: While 45% of those who like to cook say they are ‘very likely’ to look at consumer reports online before buying a car, just 37% of those who like to clean say the same.

TV Consumption: Those who like to cook are six percentage points more likely than those who prefer cleaning up to watch one or more hours of TV per day (80% vs 74%).

A preference for cooking or cleaning up is more than just a kitchen quirk, it sheds light on a variety of other experiences that impact consumers’ intent and motivation for spending, in all areas of their lives.
