If you’re looking for a first date that’s best suited for your age group or your area of the country, CivicScience polled 8,400 individuals to find favorite first-date destinations. Dive bar? Chain restaurant? Coffee shop? Let’s look at the responses.
While chain restaurants emerged as the top choice across the board with 24% selecting this option, when you factor in age and location, the outcomes take on a different hue.

Date Destinations by State
CivicScience examined poll responses by state to see how residents may view that first date location differently.
- You’ll find the largest percentage of adults who prefer dive bars as a first date venue in Washington D.C. (17%)
- Kentucky residents take the lead in the chain restaurant category at 40%. (Utah isn’t far behind)
- If you live in Montana, you’ll likely be heading to a coffee shop for that first date experience. (31% say they prefer this location.)
- All night diners didn’t fare well overall, but 13% of Wyoming respondents picked this destination.
Date Venue Preferences – Age
Responses from the poll showed that those in the 65+ age group are twice as likely to fancy cocktail lounges when compared to any other age group. Chain restaurants surfaced as a top choice for most age groups, but those in the 25-29 age group had the least interest in this type of first date venue.
