From horoscopes to birth charts, astrology continues to play a role in how some Americans think about relationships. But when it comes to dating, how much does zodiac compatibility really matter?
According to a CivicScience poll of more than 14K respondents, just 9% say zodiac compatibility is an important factor when considering a romantic match. Another 15% say it matters somewhat, while 18% say not really, and nearly 50% say it doesn’t matter at all. The remaining 9% have no opinion, highlighting that while astrology has a presence in dating culture, it’s far from a deciding factor for most.
Demographically, Gen Z leads in saying zodiac compatibility is important, with 18% prioritizing it, followed by Millennials (13%). Women are nearly three times as likely as men to say it matters, and interest is also higher among middle-income households, city residents, and those living in the South.

But demographics aren’t the only thing setting astrology-minded daters apart. CivicScience data reveal distinct behaviors and attitudes among those who say zodiac compatibility is important compared to those who say it’s not:
- Dating Habits: Forty-four percent of those who value zodiac compatibility say they go on a date once a week or more, compared to just 14% of those who say zodiac compatibility isn’t important.
- Astrology Engagement: Among this group, 6% say they’ve made a major life decision based on astrology, 35% say they closely follow the phases of the moon, and 56% say they believe in guiding signs from the universe.
- Shopping Preferences: Those who prioritize zodiac compatibility are nearly twice as likely to say they prefer shopping with others, suggesting a more social approach to everyday activities.
- Retail Therapy: They’re also far more likely to say they shop to relieve stress all the time (36% vs. 5% of those who say zodiac compatibility doesn’t matter at all).
While most Americans may not be consulting the stars before swiping right, a smaller group clearly sees astrology as part of the dating equation. For these individuals, zodiac compatibility connects to a broader set of behaviors, from how often they date to how they make decisions and even how they shop, showing that for some, love may be written in the stars after all.
