Stress-Cleaning This Season? You’re Not Alone

For many, this is the time of year when stress is at a high point. With so much to get done–from buying presents to gathering with friends and family–and seemingly so little time, everyone reacts to the fullness of the season in their own way. And one of those ways is stress-cleaning.

Currently, 55% of Americans have stress-cleaned in general (excluding ‘other/not sure’), a group that skews female (64% vs 46%), and Millennial (71%). This cleaning quirk is also more common among those who make $100K or less each year. However, this is just the beginning of what sets stress-cleaners apart from those who do not find relief from their anxiety in the bottom of a vacuum bag.

Here is the dirty truth about stress-cleaners:

Subscription Cleaning Users: Stress cleaners are 19 percentage points more likely than non stress-cleaners to have tried a subscription cleaning supply box (37% vs 19%).

Energetic Cleansing: Those who stress-clean are nearly twice as likely as non-stress-cleaners to intend to use a smudge stick to energetically cleanse their home (32% vs 17%).

Out of Town Visitors: Stress cleaners are 11 percentage points more likely than non stress-cleaners to dread out of town family visits (33% vs. 22%).

Exercise: While more than two-thirds of stress-cleaners exercise, just half of non stress-cleaners say the same (67% vs 51%).

Meditation App Users: Stress-cleaners are three times as likely as non stress-cleaners to have used a meditation app.

For stress-cleaners, it’s not just about physically cleaning their space, but energetically doing so as well. And while they may dread those out-of-town guests, they lean on activities like exercise and mindfulness apps, potentially in an effort to balance out their big feelings.
