As nostalgia continues to dominate entertainment, many Americans are turning to old TV shows and movies for comfort. But when it comes to reboots, opinions are split. A new CivicScience survey shows that only 6% of U.S. adults are all for reboots, whether they follow the same or a different storyline, while 38% say they’re “okay” with them. The largest share (43%) is against reboots altogether, and 13% have no opinion.
The people most likely to be all-in on reboots are younger, male, and live in middle-income households. They’re also more likely to be city dwellers and residents of the Northeast.
But demographics aren’t the only thing setting reboot fans apart:
-
Gaming Spend: Reboot enthusiasts spend the most on video games compared to other groups.
-
TV Habits: They’re more likely to watch TV during the day or early evening, whereas those against reboots lean toward nighttime viewing.
-
Theater Visits: Frequent theater-goers are the most likely to support a show or movie reboot.
Reboot fans stand out not just for their love of familiar storylines, but also for how they spend and watch. From gaming consoles to early-evening TV binges to repeat trips to the theater, these audiences show that sometimes the old—and reimagined—never really goes out of style.
