It’s time to turn in for the night. Are you leaving your socks on as you climb into bed? An ongoing CivicScience survey of more than 6,100 U.S. adults with an opinion reveals that just under two in five (38%) are comfortable sleeping with socks on, compared to 62% who are not. A look at opinions by age reveals an interesting and divided picture. Millennials are by far the most open to sleeping with socks on, while Gen Z, aged 18-29, is the least supportive. Women are slightly more likely than men to favor sleeping with socks on (40% to 37%, respectively).

But there’s much more data to explore beyond demographics:

Sleep Stats: Those open to sleeping with socks are four points more likely than those opposed to say they get enough sleep ‘always’ or ‘most of the time’  (53% to 49%, respectively). Additionally, 61% of sock sleepers say two or more blankets are the ideal number for a good night’s sleep, compared to 50% of non-sock sleepers.

TV Watching: Those for (41%) and against (39%) sleeping with socks on are nearly equally as likely to be daily watchers of cable TV. Looking at two of the popular game shows, Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, those who support sleeping with socks on are much more likely to prefer Jeopardy (64% to 53% of non-sock sleepers). Meanwhile, 47% of those opposed to sock sleeping prefer Wheel of Fortune, outpacing sock fans who share the same sentiment by 11 points.

Device Addition: Fifty-seven percent of those who favor sleeping with socks say they are at least ‘somewhat’ addicted to their digital device, compared to 44% of those against sock sleeping who say the same (among digital device owners).

Sprite Fandom: Those who are open to sleeping with socks on are eight percentage points more likely than those opposed to say they enjoy drinking Sprite (57% to 49%).

Shopping on eBay: Forty-three percent of adults who are open to sleeping with socks on say they like to shop on eBay, outpacing those against sleeping with socks on by eight points (35%).

From sleep to shopping habits, the simple choice of keeping your socks on or off is a surprisingly strong predictor of your preferences, proving that this cozy divide runs deeper than just the sheets.
