July 14th is National Mac and Cheese Day. As one of America’s favorite side dishes, it only seems fitting to honor the creamy classic with a day of its own. However, the beauty of mac and cheese is just how customizable it is. And if you’re in the mood to add a bit more substance to the dish, you’re not alone.

CivicScience data show that 32% of Americans say grilled chicken is their favorite healthy addition to a bowl of mac and cheese. In second place are the 27% who enjoy broccoli, while in third place are the 12% who prefer peas.

Men are seven percentage points more likely than women to enjoy grilled chicken as an add-in (36% vs 29%), while women are 10 percentage points more likely to toss in broccoli (32% vs 22%). Additionally, adults aged 44 and younger are more likely to enjoy all three top add-ins than those aged 45 and older.

Of course, this demographic data is only the first taste of what sets grilled chicken fans apart from broccoli buffs and pea prioritizers. The data provide an inside look:

Screen Time Limits: Among parents, those who prefer grilled chicken in their mac and cheese are 10 percentage points more likely to limit their kids’ screen time to the weekend than those who prefer peas (25% vs 15%).

Live Entertainment: Those who prefer peas in their mac and cheese are eight percentage points more likely to attend live music and film festivals at least monthly than those who prefer broccoli (21% vs 13%).

Meditation App Usage: While 20% of those who enjoy grilled chicken in their mac and cheese say they have used and enjoyed meditation apps, just 14% of those who prefer peas say the same.

Employment Status: Those who prefer peas in their mac and cheese are 6 percentage points more likely than those who prefer broccoli to describe their current employment status as a gig or side hustle (18% vs 12%).

Debt Outlook: While 38% of those who prefer grilled chicken in their mac and cheese expect to have less debt in the next six months, just 30% of those who prefer peas in their mac and cheese say the same.
