In honor of National Pick Strawberries Day, CivicScience asked Americans to pick their favorite berry. Strawberries came out on top, but the gaps between each berry’s fans tell a more interesting story.

Among those with an opinion, strawberries are the clear favorite at 35%, followed by blueberries (25%), raspberries (19%), and blackberries (17%).

Age plays a notable role in the results. Strawberry preference grows steadily with age, peaking at 42% among adults 65 and older. Adults 18-to-29 are the only age group that bucks the trend, favoring blueberries (31%) over strawberries (22%) and showing the strongest appetite for raspberries (28%) of any cohort.

What Berry Preferences Reveal Beyond the Fruit Bowl

Consumer-reported data from CivicScience allows for a deeper dive into how berry preferences shape other lifestyle patterns that go well beyond produce.

Ice cream sundae topping: Berry fans tend to stay loyal to their favorite. Strawberry fans overwhelmingly want strawberries on their sundae (48%), and raspberry fans lean toward raspberries (28%). Blackberry fans are the exception, reaching for maraschino cherries over their own berry at 35%.

Gardening: Strawberry fans are the most likely to have a garden, with 54% saying they grow one, compared to just 36% of blueberry fans. Blackberry and raspberry fans fall in the middle at 46% and 45%, respectively.

Smoothies and juices: Blackberry fans are the most health-conscious drinkers, with 35% consuming juices, nutritional shakes, or smoothies daily. Strawberry fans are the least likely to do so at just 15%, and a majority (52%) say they almost never drink them.

Movie theater attendance: Blackberry fans are the most frequent moviegoers, with 14% going at least once a month. Strawberry fans are the most likely to never go to the movies at all (40%).

Brand vs. price: Blackberry fans are the most brand-loyal shoppers (26% prioritize brand), while strawberry fans are the least brand-driven at just 14%, the lowest of any berry group.

Where do you stand? Take this poll now and see how your preference compares with other Americans:

A fruit preference feels personal and specific, and the data back that up. The patterns across gardening, smoothies, movie habits, and shopping behavior are consistent enough to suggest that what you reach for in the produce aisle connects to a broader set of tendencies.
