With spring break beginning for many Americans and the official start of spring just around the corner, travel plans are top of mind. While summer vacations often get the most attention, some travelers prefer hitting the road—or the skies—earlier in the year. According to a CivicScience poll, 17% of U.S. adults say spring is the best time of year to travel, highlighting a notable group that favors the season for their getaways.

Demographically, Baby Boomers aged 65+ are the most likely to say spring is the best time to travel, as well as women, middle-income households, and city residents. Regionally, those living in the Western U.S. show the strongest preference for spring travel compared to other parts of the country.
But demographics aren’t the only thing setting spring travel enthusiasts apart. CivicScience data reveal several interesting lifestyle and travel preferences among those who favor spring trips over other seasons:
-
Scenic Routes: When it comes to road travel, 71% of spring travel fans prefer taking back roads, while 29% prefer highways (excluding those with no opinion).
-
Flying First: Although plane travel is the most popular travel method overall, those who favor spring travel are more likely than travelers in other seasons to say they prefer flying.
-
Familiar vs. New Destinations: Spring travelers slightly over-index in saying they like returning to somewhere familiar, though the majority still say they prefer visiting somewhere new.
-
Fresh Starts: They are more likely than summer and fall travel fans to say they’ve felt the urge to move and start a new life in a far-off place.
-
Car Trip Preferences: Spring travel fans are the least likely to say they enjoy long car trips.
-
Early Packing: When it comes to preparing for trips, spring travelers are roughly twice as likely as other seasonal travelers to say they start packing weeks in advance.
As winter fades and warmer weather begins to return, the appeal of spring travel continues to resonate with a segment of Americans eager to get a head start on vacation season. Whether it’s catching an early flight, exploring scenic back roads, or planning the next big adventure, these travelers seem ready to embrace the season of renewal.
