April 2 is National Burrito Day, and in honor of this occasion, ongoing CivicScience data allows for the tracking of American sentiment around three popular Mexican Food items: tacos, enchiladas, and, of course, burritos.

The latest check-in of the data among U.S. adults who eat Mexican Food and have an opinion shows that tacos remain the leading favorite among these three options. That said, the percentage who say tacos are their favorite has fallen six points since 2022. Meanwhile, the percentage of those who favor burritos has overtaken that of enchiladas, now standing at 32%, up from 24% in 2022.

Gen Z adults (18-29) lead the way in loving burritos among all generations, followed by Gen Z (45-54). Millennials, meanwhile, set the pace in the other two foods, leading in their preference for tacos and enchiladas. Notably, Gen Zers are the least likely to say tacos are their favorite, by at least 10 points. Men are more likely than women to prefer burritos, but women outpace men in their enjoyment of tacos and burritos.

Demographics are just the tip of the iceberg. Here’s what your favorite Mexican Food choice says about you, according to consumer-reported data:

  • Sleep Position: Those who say burritos are their favorite of the Mexican Food options are most likely to say they typically sleep on their back. Those who lean toward enchiladas lead as side sleepers, while taco fans are the most likely to be stomach sleepers.
  • Working Through Lunch: Those who prefer burritos are the most likely to say they ‘often’ continue working while eating lunch. Taco fans, on the other hand, are the least likely to work through lunch but lead in working through lunch ‘only in emergencies.’

  • Online Shopping Planned vs. Spontaneous: Of the three Mexican Foods, those who love burritos are the most likely to say their online retail shopping is ‘mostly planned in advance.’ Consumers who lean toward tacos say their online shopping is a mix of planned and spontaneous, while enchilada lovers outpace as mostly spontaneous shoppers.
  • Buying Products Directly on Social Media: Americans who prefer enchiladas set the pace in reporting they’ve bought something directly through a social media platform by at least six points. They’re also just as likely as taco lovers to say they plan to make such a purchase. Burrito lovers, meanwhile, make up the highest percentage who say they’ve never done this.
  • YouTube Usage: When it comes to how often they visit YouTube, those who love burritos are most likely to visit YouTube daily. It’s enchilada lovers who lead the way in being weekly YouTube viewers. While it’s a small percentage, Tacos fans are the most likely to report they’ve never visited YouTube.

A favorite among three beloved Mexican foods may feel like a trivial choice, but the consumer behaviors that align with each preference reveal something far more telling about the rhythms of everyday American life.
