February 9 is National Pizza Day! In honor of this, CivicScience asked Americans about one of the most contentious debates in food: Does pineapple belong on pizza? Here’s what they’ve told us.
The latest data among U.S. adults shows a very slim gap, with the ‘it does not belong’ crowd narrowly outpacing the pineapple on pizza crowd (excluding ‘other / no opinion’). Broken down by age, Gen X aged 45-64 is the most supportive of pineapple on pizza, while those aged 65 and over represent the strongest opposition.

Beyond the topline, CivicScience data highlights the distinct ways in which those who favor pineapple on pizza differ from those who are against it:
Domino’s Fans: More than half of those who believe pineapple belongs on pizza (52%) say they enjoy Domino’s pizza, 14 points higher than those who are against pineapple on pizza.
Online reviews: Nearly one-third of pineapple on pizza supporters ‘always’ seek out online reviews for items they want to purchase, compared to 21% of those who oppose pineapple on pizza.
Travel, Home, and Cooking Content: Two-thirds of pineapple on pizza fans say they watch at least one hour of travel/home/cooking on TV in an average week, 14 points higher than those who oppose pineapple on pizza.
Sporting Event Attendance: Those who are against pineapple on pizza are twice as likely as pineapple on pizza lovers to say they attend a sports event at least once a month or more.
Clearly, pineapple on pizza fans aren’t just particular about their controversial topping choice—they’ve got unique experiences and clear opinions about everything from where they order their pies, to how they research purchases, and what they watch on TV.
