From daily routines to small personal habits, everyone has their own way of getting ready in the morning—even down to the order of getting dressed. According to CivicScience data from nearly 10K respondents, Americans are nearly split on one surprisingly divisive question: do you put on your pants before or after your socks? Forty-eight percent say they put on pants before socks, while 46% say they put on socks first, and the remaining 6% say they’re not sure.
Preferences vary across demographic groups. Gen Z is the most likely to put on pants first, while Gen X and Baby Boomers lead in putting on socks before pants. There’s also a notable gender divide: 54% of women say they put on pants before socks, compared to just 33% of men. Meanwhile, 55% of men say they put on socks first, versus 40% of women. Regionally, those in the Western U.S. are most likely to put on pants first, while Northeasterners and Midwesterners lead in putting on socks first.

But demographics aren’t the only thing separating these two camps. CivicScience data reveal some unexpected differences in travel habits, fashion preferences, and daily routines:
- Vacation clothes: Those who put on pants before socks are six points more likely to say they usually wear everything they pack on a trip or vacation than those who put on pants after socks.
- Pants or shorts: Those who put on pants first are more likely to say they typically wear pants, whereas those who put on socks first are more likely to say shorts.
- Airplane attire: Those who put on pants first are more likely to wear formal or fashionable outfits on planes, while those who put on socks first are more likely to choose loose, comfortable clothing, as well as standard shirts and pants.
- Fashion style: Among those with an opinion, those who put on pants first are 10 points more likely to say they gravitate toward trendy fashion, and they also lead in vintage and secondhand styles. Meanwhile, those who put on socks first are more likely to favor smaller boutique and luxury brands.
- Wardrobe refresh: Those who put on socks first are more than twice as likely to say they refresh their work wardrobe at least somewhat often (26% vs. 10% of those who put on pants first).
