March 11th is World Plumbing Day. While the benefits of plumbing are countless, the ability to fix a plumbing issue requires specific skills and the motivation to get the job done. That shouldn’t be a problem, however. Data show that 58% of Americans consider themselves ‘highly or somewhat capable’ at troubleshooting plumbing problems, whereas, 42% describe themselves as ‘not capable at all’ (among those with an opinion).

In terms of who is fixing leaky pipes, men outpace women by 27 percentage points when it comes time to troubleshoot. Gen Z and those who make $100K+ are also more likely to consider themselves capable amateur plumbers than the rest of the population.

However this is just the beginning of what sets those who believe they can troubleshoot a plumbing problem apart from the rest.

Here’s how confident amateur plumbers stand out:

Self-Assessed Health: Those who consider themselves capable of troubleshooting plumbing issues are seven percentage points more likely to consider themselves ‘very healthy’ than those who do not consider themselves capable (23% vs 16%).

Upcoming Travel Spend: Within the last year, nearly one in four (20%) who say they are capable of troubleshooting plumbing issues anticipate spending more on travel in the future. Just 16% of those who do not consider themselves capable say the same.

Happiness: Those who could troubleshoot a plumbing issue are seven percentage points more likely to say they’re happy than those who could not (53% vs 46%).

Water Preferences: While nearly half (44%) of those who believe they can troubleshoot a plumbing issue say they drink filtered or softened water most often, just over one in three (36%) who do not have plumbing troubleshooting skills say the same, who lead in drinking bottled water.

Self-Assessed Attractiveness: Those who say they’re capable of troubleshooting plumbing issues are 10 percentage points more likely than those who do not consider themselves plumbing proficient to believe they are more attractive than most people their age and gender (42% vs 32%).

As the data show, those who feel they could take on a plumbing mishap tend to have an overall positive view of themselves–from their health to their appearance and everything in between. With their elevated happiness and anticipation for upcoming travel, these consumers may move through the world with rose-colored glasses, and plumbing that works like a charm.
