Considering Cutting Your Own Hair? 13% of Americans Are, Too

Although every hairstyle requires a little something different, trips to the hair salon are a familiar part of the routine for many Americans. However, opting into a salon visit may not be for everyone–whether due to the financial cost, time required, or any number of other reasons. So it may not come as a surprise that 13% of Americans have been considering learning to cut their own hair (among those with an opinion).

A quick look at the demographic data show that men and women are equally curious about a DIY hair-cutting experience, while Gen Z leads the way in contemplating this choice. It’s also top of mind for those making $50K to $100K per year–those who, despite having the funds to spend on a haircut, may have just enough time to learn how to do it themselves–and save in the process.

Those considering cutting their own hair show unique consumer behavior outside of the salon as well (among those with an opinion):

TV Fans: While 44% of those who are thinking about cutting their own hair consider TV shows ‘important’ in their life, just 21% of non DIY hair-cutters say the same.

Eating Up the Bars: Those on the fence about cutting their own hair are three times as likely as those adamantly against it to eat snack, health, diet, or supplement bars.

Convenience Store Shoppers: Those considering cutting their own hair are 18 percentage points more likely than those who won’t cut their own hair to purchase food and beverages at convenience stores about once a week.

A Pension for Designer Fashion: Half of those contemplating a DIY hair cut purchase designer fashion, compared to just 17% of non DIY hair-cutters.

A Need for Speed: While 56% of those considering the at-home haircut are NASCAR fans, just 20% of those in opposition to the idea say the same.

With so many Americans considering cutting their own hair, it’s clear that the reasons are multi-faceted. Far from being just a cost-saving measure, those considering flexing their creative muscles and giving themselves a new do are active participants–not just in personal grooming, but in many aspects of their lives.
