With summer travel just around the corner, the days of alternate schedules and out-of-office auto-responses will be here soon. And when Americans head out of town, those with a regular health and fitness routine face the choice of either committing to workouts on the road or planning to get back into the swing of things upon their return.
Current CivicScience data show that the largest percentage of Americans (44%) do not maintain their routines while on vacation. Meanwhile, 36% sometimes do, and 20% always stick to their regular routines.
Women are more likely than men to let their workouts slip (46% vs 42%), while high-income earners are more likely than low-income earners to stick to their fitness schedule (27% vs 20%).

Although it may seem inconsequential on the surface, whether or not you choose to maintain your health and fitness routine while on vacation can say more about you than you might think. Here’s what the data show:
National Park Visits: Those who stick to their workouts on vacation are nine times more likely to say they visit State or National Parks a few times a week than those who leave their workout routine at home (18% vs 2%).
Fast Casual Dining: While 22% of those who continue working out while on vacation say they eat at fast casual restaurants once a week or more, just 9% of those who do not partake in vacation workouts say the same.
Screen Time Limits: Among parents, those who continue their health and fitness routines while on vacation are more than four times as likely to say they limit their kids’ screen time than those who fall off the workout bandwagon when they’re out of office (17% vs 4%).
Plant-Based Meats: While 32% of those who work out while on vacation say they have tried and liked plant-based meat options, just 14% of those who do not work out on vacation say the same (among those aware).
Radio Listenership: Those who continue their workouts on vacation are 10 percentage points more likely to listen to the radio in the early morning–from 6-8 am–than those who opt out of a vacation sweat session (33% vs 23%).
While there are many reasons to continue or pause your regular workout routine while away from home, it’s clear that the choice you make isn’t just physical; it’s linked to a web of other consumer behaviors that impact all aspects of your life.
