January 27th is National Chocolate Cake Day. While there are so many cake flavors to enjoy, chocolate cake remains the fan favorite, with 41% of U.S. adults ranking this as their top pick outpacing those who said vanilla (24%), red velvet (15%), carrot (13%), and lemon/lime/orange (8%) cake (among those with an opinion, excluding ‘other’). Those who enjoy chocolate cake tend to skew male and aged 65 and up.

However, these demographic insights are just the first taste of what sets chocolate cake lovers apart from all the rest.

Here are the sweet facts about chocolate cake fans compared to fans of other cake flavors:

Time in the Car: While more than half of chocolate cake fans spend less than one hour per day in their car (51%), just 36% of vanilla cake fans say the same.

Spending Behaviors: While the majority of chocolate cake fans say they are careful about spending (72%), red velvet fans are 16 percentage points less likely to say the same.

Breaking News: For breaking news, chocolate cake fans are 12 percentage points more likely than lemon, lime and orange cake fans to turn to a local news channel (35% vs 23%).

Coffee: Chocolate cake fans are 12 percentage points more likely than red velvet fans to say that they drink coffee every day, without fail (47% vs 35%).

Book Preferences: Chocolate cake fans lead in preferring new, printed books, outpacing all other cake fans in this category by at least ten percentage points.

Clearly, those who enjoy chocolate cake aren’t afraid to stand out from the crowd. They’re clear and unapologetic about their preferences–and their dislikes–on the plate and beyond.
