When it comes time for a quick, tasty and simple lunch, nothing can compare to a grilled cheese sandwich. However, not all grilled cheese makers choose the same slices to sandwich in between those two pieces of bread, which means that a cheese showdown is almost inevitable. Coming in first place is American cheese, with cheddar on its heels. Third place goes to Swiss, while Gouda flies just under the radar in fourth.
Despite just 7% of respondents claiming Gouda as their preferred grilled cheese selection, this group of consumers stand out from the crowd in other ways. Those who opt for gouda skew younger and higher income. However, this is just the beginning of what sets gouda grilled cheese fans apart.
Here are the gooey facts about those who choose gouda as compared to those who prefer other cheeses in their grilled cheese:
Spicy Food: Gouda fans are over 10 points more likely than American and cheddar fans to say they like spicy food.
Brand Buyers: If a specific brand of grocery item is not in stock, gouda grilled cheese fans are the most likely to buy a closely-related item from the same brand instead, leading all others in this behavior by at least nine percentage points.
Event Attendees: Gouda grilled cheese fans splurge on themselves with an expensive meal, outpacing all other respondents with the same habit by at least four percentage points.
Delivery Diners: Gouda fans are the most likely of all cheese fans to order takeout or delivery four or more times per week, outpacing all others with this same frequency by at least 17 percentage points.

Although they may not seem to stand out in the world of grilled cheese favorites, gouda fans display unique consumer behaviors that set them apart as a dedicated, fun-loving bunch, who enjoy getting out to an event just as much as they enjoy ordering takeout at home.
