Did you know that coconut cream pie has a nationally celebrated day? It’s true! Love it or hate it, the pie’s special day is June 5th. Celebrating coconut cream pie, however, raises the question of coconut in desserts in general. Often considered a summer flavor, coconut can be somewhat divisive.
In fact, CivicScience data show that 37% of Americans say they don’t like coconut desserts. This is followed by 35% who say it’s just “okay,” and 27% who “love” a coconut dessert. Women are four percentage points more likely than men to say that they love a coconut dessert, while low-income earners slightly edge out all others in their appreciation of the under-appreciated tropical flavor.

However, this demographic data is just the beginning of what sets coconut dessert lovers apart from the haters. Here’s what the data show:
Locally Grown Food: Those who love coconut-flavored desserts are nearly twice as likely as those who don’t like coconut desserts to buy locally grown food every chance they get (30% vs 17%).
Spending Habits: While 75% of coconut dessert fans say they are careful about spending, just 60% of those who do not like coconut desserts say the same.
Political Interest: Those who love a coconut-flavored dessert are 19 percentage points more likely to say they follow politics ‘very closely’ than those who do not like coconut-flavored desserts (46% vs 27%).
Spice Fans: When it comes to savory flavors, fans of coconut in desserts are 11 percentage points more likely to be favorable towards spicy food than those who do not like coconut in their desserts (71% vs 60%).
Sleep Time: Those who love coconut in their desserts are six percentage points more likely to get six hours or less of sleep per night than those who dislike coconut desserts (40% vs 34%).
