As the Northern Hemisphere enters the longest days of the year, the chance of sun exposure increases. And while long summer days may be fun, increased sun exposure also increases the risk of sunburn, which is objectively less enjoyable.
Recent CivicScience data show that 66% of Americans identify as someone who gets a sunburn easily. In contrast, 34% say they do not.
A quick glance at demographic data shows that self-reported sunburns skew towards women and low-income individuals, with women and those who make $50K or less annually outpacing men and those who make $100K or more annually by nine percentage points each.

However, this demographic data is just the beginning of what sets the sunburn-prone apart from those who say they are never afflicted. Here’s what the data show:
Daytime Sleep Habits: Those who get sunburned easily are 13 percentage points less likely than those who don’t sunburn to say they can sleep easily when the sun is out (23% vs 36%).
Water Preferences: While 37% of those who get sunburned easily say they consume bottled water most often, just 31% of those who do not get an easy sunburn say the same.
Local Ingredients:Those prone to easy sunburn are 10 percentage points more likely to be interested in fast-food and quick-service restaurants featuring local ingredients than those who do not burn in the sun (45% vs 35%).
Fatigue: While 41% of those who easily get sunburned report feeling more tired and fatigued than usual, just 30% of those who do not burn easily say the same.
Film Genre Preferences: Those who get an easy sunburn are nearly twice as likely to enjoy watching a drama or romance film as those who do not burn in the sun easily (16% vs 9%).
