With the holidays right around the corner, ‘tis the season for guests staying the night and homes bursting at the seams with family and friends. While this might mean crashing on a couch, it may also mean bunking on an air mattress–the perennial answer for those wondering how to fit even more loved ones under one roof.

Currently, among those with an opinion, 63% of Americans can get a restful night’s sleep on an air mattress. This group skews male and is led by Gen Z. However, there’s more to air mattress sleepers than meets the eye.

The truth about those who can sleep on an air mattress may surprise you:

Bed Times: Those who have a restful sleep on an air mattress are more likely to go to bed between 10pm and 12am than those who do not sleep well on an air mattress (60% vs. 52%).  Meanwhile, those who don’t sleep well on air mattresses are five percentage points more likely to go to bed after midnight.

Sober Curious: While more than half (57%) of restful air mattress sleepers identify as sober curious, just 35% of non-restful air mattress sleepers say the same.

Travel Spending: Those who sleep well on an air mattress are 11 percentage points more likely than non-restful air mattress sleepers to anticipate spending more on travel in the next month compared to last month (25% vs 14%).

Heavy Sleepers: While 30% of those who are able to get a restful night’s sleep on an air mattress say they can sleep easily when the sun is out, just 21% of non-restful air mattress sleepers say the same.

Full House: Those who sleep well on an air mattress are 12 percentage points more likely than non-restful air mattress sleepers to have four or more people living in their home.

As the data show, those who can catch some z’s on an air mattress are a resilient bunch–with an ability to sleep any time, anywhere. Sunlight and a full house can’t stand in the way of their shut eye, though with an inclination for higher travel spend, this group may simply be more willing to compromise on the quality of their mattress, in the name of making the most of every opportunity.
