With International Cat Day zooming into focus on August 8th, a new CivicScience survey offers a closer look at America’s feline-friendly households. Based on responses over the last 365 days, the data shows that 44% own at least one cat: 18% have one, 14% have two, and 13% have three or more—while 56% don’t currently own a cat.
Answer our Poll: How many cats do you own? 🐈
Lower-income households are most likely to have exactly one cat, whereas high-income households are the most likely to have two or more cats. Cat ownership is also highest among Americans aged 18-29 and decreases with age. Rural residents lead in ownership rates, and women slightly outpace men.
But demographics aren’t the only thing setting cat owners apart:
- Mindfulness Meditation Apps: Cat owners are over twice as likely as non-owners to use or plan to use these types of apps currently.
- Moving: Roughly a quarter of cat owners say they plan to buy their next residential property in the next 12 months, compared to just 6% of non-owners.
- Spending Habits: Those who own at least one cat are less likely than non-owners to say they are careful about spending money.
- Watching TV: Cat owners are likelier than non-owners to watch TV in the early evening.
