Do you sing when you’re in the car? New CivicScience data show that if you sing in the car with any frequency, you’re not alone. In fact, nearly one-quarter say they do it ‘all the time,’ while another 49% say they’re car singers ‘sometimes.’ Just 23% say they never sing in the car, while 4% selected ‘does not apply.’ A look by age reveals that Gen Xers are the most frequent car singers, outpacing all generations (and doubling those aged 65+) in reporting they sing in the car ‘all the time.’

But demographics aren’t the only thing setting car singers apart. CivicScience data reveal meaningful differences when it comes to being in the car (and beyond) between those who sing in the car all the time and those who never do:
-
Music Genre: More than half (56%) of frequent car singers say they most often listen to rock music, outpacing non-singers who say the same by 12 percentage points. Non-car singers, meanwhile, are more likely to say they most often listen to country (31% to 25%, respectively).
- Music Streaming Platforms Those who often sing in the car are 4X as likely as non-car singers to say they listen to music on spotify most often. Conversely, non-singers are more than 4X as likely to listen on Pandora.
-
Driver or Passenger on Road Trips: A slim majority of car-singers (56%) and non-car-singers (52%) with an opinion say they are a better driver than they are a passenger when on long road trips. That said, nearly one-third of frequent car singers say they are a better passenger, compared to 21% among non-singers who say the same. Non-signers are more than twice as likely to say they are equally as good as a road trip driver or passengers (27% to 12%).
-
Back Roads vs. Highways: The majority of both car singers (64%) and non-singers (71%) prefer back roads over highways, while more than one-third (36%) of car singers lean towards back roads, outpacing non-singers by seven points.
-
Favorite Gas Station/Convenience Store Food to Get on a Road Trip: Those who sing in the car all the time are more than twice as likely to say their favorite gas/ convenience store food for a road trip is a hot dog or hamburger. Non-singers, on the other hand, are more than twice as likely to say they prefer to just grab coffee (excluding does not apply).
-
Coffee Drinkers: Speaking of coffee, non-singers are much more likely to be daily coffee drinkers (59% to 43%), while nearly one-quarter (22%) of frequent car singers say they never drink coffee.
At the end of the day, how Americans spend time in the car reflects something bigger about who they are. Music taste, road trip roles, and even gas station snack preferences all connect to form a surprisingly cohesive picture of the different ways people find joy in the journey.
